RAPAPORT... Anglo American's CEO Cynthia Carroll made Forbes magazine's list of most powerful women. Carroll appeared on the list of 100 women at No.7. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel ranked No.1 for the second consecutive year. cynthia carroll

Carroll, 50, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1982 with a master of science degree in geology. She later earned her MBA from Harvard.

Her rank at Forbes topped Oprah Winfrey (No.21,) and one of New York's senators and now presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton (No.25.)

Anglo American, which holds 45 percent interest in De Beers, appointed Carroll in October 2006.

"Though Carroll is little known on the world stage, she is a powerhouse in the world of commodities, a sector crucial to the world's economy," the editorial team at Forbes wrote.

"And within the corridors of world governments, she is a force to be reckoned with," the magazine's staff concluded.
