RAPAPORT... Firestone Diamonds sold 55,950 carats for $5.1 million from two tenders held during February and April 2013. The tenders were 100 percent sold by lot, the company reported.

In February, 35,718 carats fetched $3 million, or an average price of $84.49 per carat. The April tender sold 20,232 carats for $2.1 million, or an average price of $101.67 per carat. Firestone noted that the higher prices in April were achieved without selling any high-value stones at the tender.

"Not only are the diamond prices up considerably since February but they have increased across the board, demonstrating a higher-level of confidence in the sector," said Firestone's CEO, Tim Wilkes. "This is further endorsed by the increasing number of diamond buyers present at April's tender."

The company reported that 109 buyers attended the April sale compared with 89 buyers at February's tender. Both tenders were held at the facility operated independently by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre.
