RAPAPORT... The Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) awarded the annual Carell-WJA grant to Kelly Jacobson of Small Metals Studio, a Chicago-based business creating metal jewelry.  Jacobson has a BFA in metalsmithing and an MFA in sculpture.

Jacobson is currently running her own business as well as the custom design departments in four different stores, while studying for her graduate gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Eventually, Jacobson wants to give back to the community by teaching. "The best memory I have from all my years teaching was showing a class of primarily female students how to weld," said Jacobson.  "Knowing how to make something is so empowering. I remember in college when I first began to have that confidence in knowing how something was made or how some mechanism worked and it literally changed my life."

The $5,000 merit-based award was created in memory of Brooke Tivol McGrath, who passed away at 28 due to a rare blood infection. As a member of the WJA, she helped introduce her employer, Carelle, to the jewelry industry. This award is meant to aid in establishing a designer's business within five years of its conception.
