Press Release: Jewelers of America (JA), the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry marketplace, elected two new industry leaders to its board of directors at its semi-annual board meeting on July 26 in New York. The new directors are Karen Goracke of Borsheims Fine Jewelry and Gifts and Mercedes Abramo of Cartier North America. The new directors will serve through 2017.

“It is a pleasure to welcome these two jewelry executives to our board. Their depth of industry knowledge will provide Jewelers of America with valuable insights as we continue with our mission to maintain consumer confidence in the fine jewelry marketplace,” said JA's board chairman, Bill Farmer Jr., a partner of Farmers Jewelry in Lexington, Kentucky.

Together, Goracke and Abramo have more than 45 years of experience in the fine jewelry and luxury goods industry.

Goracke is the president and CEO of Borsheims Fine Jewelry and Gifts. She began her long tenured career with Borsheims in 1988 and was most recently appointed to her role in 2013 by Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.  Holding different roles across the company gives her an extremely broad retail background and depth of knowledge of the worldwide jewelry industry.  Goracke is also active with the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), Jewelers for Children (JFC) and the Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA).

Abramo was appointed the president and CEO of Cartier North America in June 2014, having joined the company in 2008.  Abramo oversees the strategy and operations for Cartier in North America including 35 boutiques, an ecommerce channel  and over 150 specialty retailers. Prior to joining Cartier, she held management positions with Tiffany & Co., Ritz Carlton Hotels and Loews Miami Beach. She also serves on the advisory board of the Luxury Education Foundation.

JA’s board of directors is led by an executive committee comprised of  Farmer Jr., chairman-elect Ryan Berg of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry,  vice chairman Scot Congress of Congress Jewelers, vice chairman Mark Light of Sterling Jewelers Inc., treasurer John Henne of Henne Jewelers and secretary Holly Wesche of Wesche Jewelers.
