India's January Polished Diamond Exports +5%

Rough Imports Slump

RAPAPORT... India's polished diamond exports grew 5 percent year on year to $1.793 billion in January, according to preliminary data from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). By volume, exports rose 5 percent to 2.784 million carats. Polished imports, meanwhile, dropped 27 percent to $372.70 million. As a result, net polished exports, the excess of exports over imports, jumped 25 percent to $1.42 billion.

Rough imports plunged 32 percent in January to $851.38 million and rough exports declined 14 percent to $106.45 million. Net rough imports, calculated as imports minus exports, plummeted 34 percent to $745 million.

India’s January net diamond account -- the difference between net imports and net exports – jumped to  $675.05 million compared with  $4.94 million in January 2014.

The trade in synthetic diamonds declined across the board in contrast to the mixed results for natural diamonds. Polished synthetic stone exports fell 6 percent to $8.11 million, while rough synthetic imports declined 23 percent to $7.74 million and polished synthetic stone imports fell 25 percent to $5.59 million.
