(Rapaport...November 29, 2005) During the height of the lunch hour on 47th Street in Manhattan, police say two men dressed in FedEX delivery clothes entered 580 Fifth Avenue and robbed Doppelt & Greenwald Diamonds of about $4 million in diamonds.

The men went to a sixth floor diamond dealer's office and pretended to be delivering a package. The suspects then said the package was too large too slip under the door and that a signature was needed. Once inside, they displayed weapons and tied-up office employees of Doppelt & Greenwald Diamonds at gunpoint.

One employee was able to free himself and went for police assistance in the building lobby. But the two robbers escaped and are said to have been wearing civilian clothing underneath their uniforms.

The building also holds the offices of the New York Diamond Dealers Club, but the club confirmed to Rapaport News that all was okay on their floor.

Once the New York Police Department was alerted to activity in the building, the police department said they surrounded and sealed off the building and shut 47th Street at the building's location between Fifth and Sixth avenues (Sixth is also Avenue of the Americas.) The building and street were given the all clear around 2:15 p.m. and a manhunt is underway. According to the victims, one of the suspects had dyed red hair.
