(Rapaport...January 5, 2005) comScore Network's year-end Internet retail spending summary shows consumers continued to grow their trust towards online purchases. For the Christmas holiday retail season 2005, comScore reports a 25 percent increase in retail sales to $19.6 billion, excluding travel.
For the entire year, retail sales rose 24 percent to $82.3 billion, and travel rose 20 percent to $61 billion. Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman, said that the total represents about 6 percent of total retail spending. "A 24 percent annual increase in online spending represents more than a full percentage point of consumers' expenditures, clearly showing that the traditional metric --retail same-store sales-- alone is no longer sufficient to paint an accurate picture of trends in consumer spending."
Jewelry & Watches, as a category, grew 27 percent in 2005, according to comScore. Apparel & Accessories along with Software were the fastest growing retail categories online with growth rates of 36 percent.
