(Rapaport...May 30, 2006) Cell phone handset maker Vertu, a Nokia subsidiary, said its diamond and luxury business segment is growing rapidly as a result of the brand's global expansion, which includes plans for stores in Japan and across the Nordic countries by year-end 2006. Vertu offers a line of diamond-studded handsets in 18 karat yellow or white gold and one style in platinum.
Vertu's president Alberto Torres told Finland's Kauppalehti magazine that growth rates are "in three digit numbers," which includes tens of thousands of new phones each year. The company did not have a per-unit sales target, but Torres said the company targets annual sales of hundreds of thousands per year.
Parent company Nokia does not list luxury handset sales separately.
