Japan’s Polished Import Slide in Eleventh Month

RAPAPORT... Japan’s polished diamond imports fell 10.7 percent to $72.98 million in June 2007 as the country continued to diversify away from its traditional trading partners. Japan has bought fewer diamonds in each of the past eleven months and for the first half of 2007, imports declined 16.4 percent to $459.99 million.

The total carat weight of Japan's diamond imports fell 23.6 percent to 153,670 carats in June, and by 16.4 percent to 1.127 million carats for the year to date.

India was Japan's main supplier of polished goods in June at 37.6 percent of the total, however imports declined 21 percent to $27.42 million from one year ago.  Imports from Japan’s other two main sources of polished diamonds, Belgium and Israel, fell 9.2 percent and 2.9 percent respectively.

China was the biggest growth source of Japanese diamond imports, rising 55.6 percent to $2.46 million in June. 

Japan’s gold jewelry imports declined 1.4 percent to $64 million in June. Gold jewelry imports have dropped 5.9 percent to $383.49 million in the first half of 2007. Silver jewelry declined 6.7 percent to $20.19 million, while platinum jewelry imports fell 20.4 percent to $36.73 million, and other precious metals articles dropped 73.4 percent to $118,000.

Japanese imports of ruby, sapphire, and emerald stones fell 19.6 percent to $3.7 million for the month, while pearl imports dropped 18.4 percent to $41.79 million. For the category of "other colored stones," imports fell 20.4 percent to $5.7 million.
