RAPAPORT... Forbes magazine compiled its "worst jobs" list of the 21st century and guess what -- jewelers came in at No.5. Don't feel bad though, the worst job of all was journalism.

Forbes used Department of Labor projections to compile the list, which also included computer programmers, radio announcers, farmers, and travel agents.

"The number of jewelers in the United States is expected to decline, but by less than 1 percent by 2014, the Department of Labor says. Nonetheless, the industry isn't growing, largely due to the influx of mass-produced jewelry in recent years. Would-be necklace and ring makers shouldn't be entirely discouraged--the government says prospects for highly skilled jewelers, particularly those who make custom or luxury jewelry--are 'excellent.'"

The median salary for jewelers was listed at $28,000, about half the median household income in the United States. The data found that 40 percent of jewelers are self-employed and that working conditions vary, but required vocational training and enjoying workplace solitude.
