The National Technical Information Service (NTIS,) a division of the United States Department of Commerce, reported that diamond trafficking was noted near Concepcion, Paraguay, on September 26. The report did not elaborate on the extent of illegal activity.
According to Department of Commerce records, diamonds have not been imported to the United States from Paraguay specifically, but rather, the majority of South America's diamonds are imported from Brazil.
As reported, the information read, "that a guerrilla group is reportedly operating in Antibi Cue, where most of the big estates belong to Brazilians." In addition to diamond trafficking, the reported noted illegal trading of timber and marijuana.
Paraguay borders Brazil (to north and east,) Bolivia (to the northwest,) and Argentina (to the southwest and west.)
