RAPAPORT... Colored gemstone dealer and fair trade advocate Dana Schorr died August 5 at age 63 due to complications following a heart attack.
Schorr was born in 1952 in New York City but grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where he lived the rest of his life. He entered the colored gemstone business in 1980 and dealt primarily in tanzanite gemstones.
It was through his experiences in the colored gemstone trade that Schorr became an advocate for the rights of artisanal miners. He became known among trade association participants as a strident critic of what he felt were corporate social responsibility measures that did not do enough to help small-scale producers upstream.
