Number of Online Video Ads Jump 54% in May

RAPAPORT... Digital matrix firm comScore Inc. reported that the number of U.S. Internet users who watched online video in May rose 2.2 percent year on year to 180 million. On average, the number of hours Internet viewers spent watching online video surged 27.3 percent to 21.9 hours and the total amount of advertisements they watched hit 10 billion, setting a new record high.  The number of video ads represented 54 percent year on year increase. 

 Video ads accounted for 12.6 percent of all videos viewed and 1.2 percent of all minutes spent viewing video online.





Google websites, including YouTube, again ranked as the top online video content property in May with 151.6 million unique viewers, followed by Yahoo! sites with 57.7 million users, VEVO with 48.3 million and Microsoft sites with 44.3 million, according to comScore.





But Hulu delivered the highest number of advertising impressions at 1.67 billion, while Google's properties ranked second overall with 1.39 billion, followed by the BrightRoll Video Network with 1.13 billion, Adap.tv with 966 million and TubeMogul Video Ad Platform with 897 million.

 Video ads reached 52 percent of the U.S. Internet population an average of 64 times during the month, comScore concluded.



Hulu also delivered the highest frequency of video ads to its viewers with an average of 56 per user, while ESPN delivered an average of 29 ads per viewer.
