Press Release: Jewelers for Children (JFC) has made a $10,000 donation on December 21, 2012 to the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut following the tragic shootings in Newtown on December 14.

“Everyone was affected by this terrible tragedy and we felt that as an industry, we must make some gesture towards helping our friends in Newtown start the healing process,” said Peter Engel, JFC's board chair.

JFC, whose mission is to provide support to charities that primarily benefit children, chose the American Red Cross in recognition of their efforts to help so many in the region. The United Way established a special fund to support the people in Newtown, including the families and first-responders.

JFC's board member John Green, of Lux Bond & Green, a seven-store chain in Connecticut, presented the check to the United Way on December 21, at their offices in Danbury.  "The staff of the United Way is completely drained and are having to console themselves to cope with the pain they are trying to support,'' said Green after the check presentation.  ''This is so in keeping with our mission and I am proud to be part of JFC to really help both the families of those that perished and those that will now live with this unspeakable pain.''

Jewelers for Children was founded in 1999 by the U.S. jewelry industry with the mission of helping children in need. Since its inception, JFC has donated over $40 million to programs benefiting children whose lives have been affected by illness, abuse, or neglect through charity partners St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Make-A-Wish America, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the National CASA Association.  This nationwide success is due to the continuing generosity of jewelry trade organizations, jewelry and watch manufacturing companies, jewelry retail stores, individual jewelry professionals, and jewelry consumers.
