(Rapaport...January 29, 2002) Russian-born Israeli diamantaire Lev Leviev has surpassed Dan Gertler to become the second-largest exporter of diamonds from the Congo, according to the Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv. A Lebanese diamond group controlled by a company called Primogram was the leading diamond exporter in 2001 with $33.4 million worth of exports, and Leviev was the second largest with $26.5 million in exports. Gertler was in third with $22.7 million, and in fourth place was the Ashley group from South Africa with $20.9 million worth of exports. During the last six months of 2001, the Congolese government issued both Leviev and the Lebanese group licenses that allowed them to export diamonds from the Congo. The licenses were two in a series issued since the country decided to cancel the exclusive monopoly previously held by Gertler.

Leviev already holds a monopoly on exporting diamonds from Angola, and he is reportedly trying to gain ownership of diamond mines in South Africa.
