(Rapaport...NY, Sept. 8, 1998) For the first time in its 14 year history, New York was a venue for the Argyle Pink Diamond Tender viewings. Excitement over the collection of 63 rare gems, totaling 58.20 carats, was so great that the firm added an extra day in the city to accommodate all of those interested in reviewing the diamonds. The Big Apple was the fourth stop in a six-city tour that launched in Hong Kong and then traveled to Tokyo and Sydney before landing in New York. From New York, the tender goes to London and finally on to its final destination, Geneva, where bidding wraps up on September 17.

The diamonds, ranging in size from 44 points to 3.15 carats, represent the most spectacular of the pink stones to come out of the Argyle mine between May of 1997 and May of 1998. The star of this year's tender is a 2.66-carat heart-shaped diamond that captures the essence of the collection with its passionate purplish red hues. The diamond was described by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink and Fancy Intense Purplish Red by the Hoge Raad Voor Diamant (HRD). Each gem in the tender is given a grade by both the GIA and HRD so that buyers can see the variety of interpretations of color for each stone.

Other highlights of this year's collection include 15 stones carrying a "vivid" description, and another six with the description of purplish red from the HRD. Prices from the tenders remain proprietary information, but the average price per carat last year exceeded US$100,000.
