The Trapezoid Cut

April Fancy Shapes

By Rapaport
RAPAPORT... After researching the types of diamond shapes used as side stones, J. Kleinhaus & Sons LLC decided to reintroduce the trapezoid cut, offering it in two ways: as a brilliant cut, which works well with cushion and radiant center stones, and in a step-cut version, to be paired with emerald cuts.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CUTTING ISSUES

The trapezoid cut diamond is a four-sided shape in which the top and base are parallel to each other. The side stone comes in sizes from 10 points up to 2.50 carats. Color range is from D to J, with clarity available from VS1 to SI3 in the brilliant-cut version and VS1 to SI2 in the step-cut stone.

MARKETS AND MARKETING

Kleinhaus markets the trapezoid stone to both manufacturers and retailers. It lends itself to both high-end jewelers and manufacturers and to more traditional retail jewelers and even lower-end jewelers. The stones come with certificates only on request.

The company advertises in jewelry trade publications and sends out mailings. There is a website, www.kleinhaus.com, which is in the process of being upgraded.

PRICING AND SUPPLY

Prices depend upon size. For example, a 20-point pair would be about $900 per carat and a 5-carat pair could be, depending on the quality, from $7,000 to $7,500 a carat. Supply is not a problem. Kleinhaus sources its rough from all over the world in order to have a steady supply available. All Kleinhaus rough is conflict free.

WHAT BUYERS SHOULD LOOK FOR

The trapezoid is perfect for the individual who really wants a unique ring, something different than the type of ring seen all over. Making an impressive side stone, it dresses up the diamond center stone and lends itself to distinctive, out-of-the-ordinary settings.

Being available in a choice of cut styles allows the trapezoid to be used with a variety of center diamonds.
