In India, making and wearing jewelry is a way of life. The country has a rich history of gemstones and jewelry that goes back thousands of years. Their personal connection to gems moves beyond adornment and is a symbol of spirituality. It is no wonder that today many Indian-owned companies are creating jewelry that has a new appeal in the Western world. As the global village has become further intertwined and cultures are merging together, what is beautiful is becoming more of a shared perspective. Consumers in the U.S. and other parts of the globe are understanding and appreciating aspects of traditional Indian design. Indian firms are incorporating more of a Western sensibility into their jewelry, creating wonderfully unique pieces that are having a moment in the fashion spotlight. Indian designers are geniuses at taking highly piqué, gray diamonds and opaque gems that were once thrown out and using them in designs that have a high-quotient cool factor. They innovated the slice, which is currently ubiquitous in jewelry and a fashion favorite. Some of the jewelry that is made by Indian companies works well with the current trend of understatement and much of it also has a vintage vibe that is important in fashion right now. The materials that the Indian designers use make for a wallet-friendly price point, opening more possibilities for style-conscious consumers to purchase interesting, fashion-forward diamond jewelry.
