Diversity Rules Runways

By Amber Michelle
“This season is all about fluidity,” said Mary Lou Luther, creative director, Fashion Group International (FGI). Fall 2017/Winter 2018 is a season to go with the flow. Fluidity isn’t just about clothes — it encompasses diversity from gender to transgender fluidity to age, race, size and religious fluidity. It is all about inclusion. During the FGI’s Ready-to-Wear trend presentation at the Hearst Tower in New York City,
Luther identified several of the upcoming season’s top directions — while noting that diversity is the most important movement in fashion right now .

Covered Up — Oversized and multilayered continues to be a top trend. Skirts or dresses over pants, jackets over coats and sheer overlays over anything. Layering takes clothes to a new level of seasonless dressing as pieces can be added or taken off depending on the temperature or time of day, giving items more occasions for wear.

Color — Red and blue reign on the runways this season as the dominant colors, especially bright red and blue in many hues. Greenery is the Pantone color of the year and is showing up everywhere. Camel is the favored neutral along with other warm browns. Pink, purple, yellow and orange are also major players. Black is a favorite and black and white is always right.

Shaping — Clothes take on structure with draping, ruching, folding and shirring...all techniques that show the craft of tailoring and create unique looks.

Embellishment — Embroidery, intarsia, feathers and collage all add up to a crazy patchwork of fun. Bows are tying up fashion from the collar to the shoe and everywhere in between, front and back.

Patterns — Hothouse flowers find their way into prints, while exotic animals roam the runways, especially leopards, zebras, panthers, tigers and pythons. From queens to Biblical figures and artists, faces are popular prints. Words also have a place.

Leather — A perennial cold-weather favorite, bomber jackets are classic cool along with leather pantsuits and coats.

Length by Width — Hemlines from mini to maxi and anywhere in between are runway approved along with skinny to wide-leg pants.

Fabric — Denim is hot, corduroy makes a comeback, velvet from panne to crushed is on trend, while lace and brocade step from eveningwear into daywear and become multiwear.

Stripes — Racing stripes are on the move and are particularly important in athleisure clothes.
