The Elinor Cut

Fancy Shapes October 2007

By Rapaport
RAPAPORT... The Elinor cut is a 145-facet cushion shape that was developed for optimum brilliance. The R.T. Diamond company did a B2B launch of the cut during the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in 2005. In the United States, the stone is sold under the name of Helzberg.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CUTTING ISSUES

The Elinor has 45 facets at the crown and 96 facets at the bottom. The rough used is makeable/sawable from 2 carats and up in size. Yield is approximately 37 to 40 percent. The Elinor is available in I-plus color and I1-plus clarity. Sizes currently range from 0.50 points up to 2 carats.

MARKETS AND MARKETING

Sold both loose and set in jewelry, the Elinor is a propriety cut. Around 100 stones are available per month. The stone is being marketed toward high-end retailers in the U.S., Europe and India, initially. Advertisements have appeared in leading B2B global and Indian trade publications. There is a website, www.elinordiamond.com.

The company offers retailers a variety of promotional marketing materials, including glow signs, posters, tent cards, consumer takeaway fliers and product display kit and packaging boxes. Every Elinor diamond comes with an International Gemological Institute (IGI) certificate, laser inscription and special design certificate. In the U.S., each stone comes with a GemEx™ Light Performance™ Analysis Report. Packaging is still being worked out.

PRICING AND SUPPLY

Retail prices will start at $1,499. There are some supply issues at present but the company expects them to be resolved as more people are trained to cut the stone.

WHAT BUYERS SHOULD LOOK FOR

While there are many round stones with optimum brilliance, the Elinor’s extra faceting enables it to offer more sparkle and scintillation than an ordinary cushion, making it something unique to appeal to consumers. Retailers have the advantage of an IGI-certified stone that can be purchased loose, in customized jewelry or mounted in their own Elinor collection.
