As we find ourselves right in the middle of Hollywood’s award season, who can resist watching the stars strut the red carpet in all their finery? The preshow
red-carpet fashion extravaganza is often more fun than the awards shows themselves. The fashion experts examine and comment on the gowns and jewels in great detail before and after the awards shows. Red-carpet hosts now ask “Who designed your dress and who designed your jewelry?” As fashion has evolved,
so has the jewelry. It used to be that Harry Winston ruled the red carpet. Starlets dutifully walked the gauntlet in gowns with décolleté filled with impressively large, white diamond neckwear. The bigger and more sparkly the better, pieces were often valued in the millions. Some of the more adventurous actors branched out into wearing Fred Leighton and later into Neil Lane, or Martin Katz. But the rules have completely changed. First we saw necklaces replaced by large diamond earrings, creating
a more youthful, modern silhouette that flatters the long swanlike necks of many actresses. Now, the red carpet has become more eclectic in the jewelry choices of the stars. Color
has become more prominent, new and young designers are making a mark — Samira 13, Amrapali, Brumani, Madstone, Arunashi, Elahn — to name a few. Rose cut diamonds, darkened metals, textures, multishaped gems, in one piece or varied shapes of pieces
worn together, are trendsetting. The red carpet is widely considered to be an influence
in fashion trends and with that in mind, it is easy to see that diamond jewelry is becoming more accessible. The jewelry no longer requires a bodyguard to accompany the wearer. The pieces are now more about design and ease of wear, more reflective of the unique personality of the celebrity wearing the jewel. These are styles that women at home watching the glittering display on television can also attain, jewels that they can make
their own to fit their lifestyles and personalities. A big cheer to Hollywood for
inviting everyone to the glamour party!
