• ALROSA’s supervisory board appointed Ilya Yuzhanov as its chairman. Sergey Mestnikov was elected as the first vice chairman and Sergey Barsukov became vice chairman at the September meeting that also set December 20 as the date for the company’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM) for shareholders. • President Bill Clinton will deliver the keynote address at Centurion Scottsdale 2014 on February 4. The show will run from February 2 through February 4 and continues Centurion’s Second Decade in Scottsdale, Arizona.• The Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) named Rory More O’Ferrall as honorary vice chairman. O’Ferrall, who retired from the De Beers Group after 36 years with the company, will contribute to building DDI’s corporate relations. • EGL Asia plans to add country of origin reports as well as gem testing reports for beryllium-treated stones to its current menu of identification services. In its press release, the Hong Kong-headquartered diamond and gemstone laboratory cited the rise in popularity of colored gemstones in the jewelry consumer market in China and the need to test high-quality sapphires for beryllium or diffusion treatments.• Taiwan will host its first international jewelry exhibition, the Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair, at the Taipei World Trade Center, Hall 3, from November 15 to 18, 2013. The event will include a “Taiwanese Designers Area” that features jewelry from local designers. Cumenal was the executive vice president and will retain his regional responsibilities, while assuming responsibility for the design, merchandising and marketing functions. Tiffany & Co. also named Francesca Amfitheatrof as its design director. Amfitheatrof, who will oversee the design of all of Tiffany & Co.’s product categories, most recently served as the founding partner of RS&A, a London-based agency that represents contemporary artists. • The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) appointed Brendan Laurs as the new editor-in-chief of The Journal of Gemmology. Laurs, a geologist and gemologist, is the former editor and technical specialist at Gems & Gemology. He replaced Dr. Roger Harding, who edited the journal for the last 19 years. • The French Association of Gemmology recognized John I. Koivula and the late Richard T. Liddicoat as ranking among the 50 personalities and events that have shaped the history of gems. Liddicoat, the former Gemological Institute of America (GIA) president, was named along with Koivula in the modern and contemporary gemology category. Liddicoat, who joined GIA in 1940, is considered the “father of modern gemology,” according to the GIA release. He was the architect of GIA’s D-to-Z diamond grading system. Koivula is GIA’s chief research gemologist and an authority on microscopy, photomicrography and gem inclusions.• The Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE), a subsidiary of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), appointed Prince Mupazviriho, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development of Zimbabwe, to its board of directors. For the past 20 years, he has worked in Zimbabwe’s public sector and is a member of the National Indigenization and Economic Empowerment Board.• CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) signed a memorandum of understanding to further advance responsible business practices among all sectors of the jewelry supply chain. Signed at the International Jewellery London Show (IJL), the agreement includes the use of corporate social responsibility education programs developed by CIBJO in collaboration with the United Nations and a chain of custody certification program developed by RJC. • The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) approved trademarks as follows:- “Steal Her Heart” to Oz’s Jewelers Corporation of North Carolina on August 20 with registration number 4386612.
- “Artistry Diamonds” to Sterling Jewelers Inc. of Ohio on August 20 with registration number 4389571. Sterling Jewelers, the U.S. division of the Signet Group, defined “Artistry Diamonds” as a brand of diamond jewelry.
- “Shades of Wonder” to Sterling Jewelers Inc. of Ohio on August 20 with registration number 4389393.
- “Celebration 102” to TXDC L.P. collectively with Zale Delaware Inc. (Zale Corporation) on August 27 with registration number 4393835. “Celebration 102” refers to goods and services, including jewelry and diamonds.
- “The Celebration Diamond Collection” to Zale Delaware Inc. (Zale Corporation) on September 3 with registration number 4397639. The trademark applies to retail jewelry store services that feature jewelry and diamonds.
- “Daniel’s Making Diamond Dreams Come True” to Sherwood Management Co. Inc. of Culver City, California on September 3 with the registration number 4394262. • Anglo American, the parent company of De Beers, presented $2.6 million to Steve Thomas, the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations of British Columbia for the Peace Northern Caribou Plan. Anglo American, which recently started work on its Trend-Roman metallurgical coal project in British Columbia, stated it was the largest contribution to date for caribou mitigation measures under the Peace Northern Caribou Plan. Caribou herds have been in decline in the region due to habitat destruction from mining and an increase in predators, primarily wolves.• The National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA) announced that it will award an ACE© It Appraisal Conference Scholarship to a deserving gemology student. The scholarship will cover the conference fee to the 41st Annual ACE© It Winter Educational Conference scheduled for February 2 to 3, 2014 in Tucson, Arizona. Deadline for submission is November 1, 2013 and the final selection by the NAJA Scholarship Advisory Board will be announced December 1, 2013.• Tivon Fine Jewellery received the Gem-A Empathy Award at this year’s International Jewellery London (IJL). London-based Tivon Fine Jewellery is a 50-year-old, second-generation family-owned company whose name is taken from the Hebrew word for nature. The award recognizes an IJL exhibitor who demonstrates knowledge, enthusiasm and flare for colored gems, and whose jewelry exhibits a “captivating use of the stones,” according the Gem-A statement. • Treasure Hut Jewelry announced its newly patented magnetic jewelry clasps to facilitate fastening necklaces and bracelets. Constructed of sterling silver and coated with a rhodium finish, the jewelry clasps can be purchased with a contrasting bright and satin finish.
