It’s Personal

Anything goes for spring/summer fashion 2016, as long as it’s tailored to your personality.

Details, details...it’s all in the details for spring fashion 2016, as long as it’s comfortable and creates a unique statement. From bows to ruffles, feathers, fringe and frayed edges to fashion favorites pleats and pockets, it’s all in how the looks are combined. The biggest news is that the rules of fashion are bending, allowing for more freedom of choice. Hemlines are everywhere from thigh high to ankle brushing and hovering at all lengths in between. Pants are narrow and skinny, or wide and wider. Boho hippie chic influenced by the 1970s stays on track along with daywear and eveningwear inspired by athletic wear. Pantsuits take center stage. Prints and patterns continue strong, with a hothouse of florals and landscapes, animal prints, drawings, scribbles, painterly art and words all making the scene. Graphic stripes, dots and plaids are key. Metallics remain a staple. Slouchy and oversized pieces continue to trend and layering is crucial to creating personal style.

“It used to be a coat, jacket, sweater, twin cardigan and maybe a T-shirt. It’s now sheer dress, bra, jacket and shorts. Or a see-through jumpsuit over undies or a coat, hoodie, skirt, lace slip and shoe tights,” explains Marylou Luther, creative director of Fashion Group International (FGI), during the Ready to Wear Collections Spring /Summer 2016 Trend Overview presentation at the Hearst Tower in New York City.
For jewelry, Luther predicts big earrings that dangle to the shoulder and oversized Jenny-from-the-block hoops are the ones to watch. Bracelets, chokers and layers of necklaces will look right. Dallas Selsey, partner, Luxe Intelligence, a New York City–based brand intelligence and business development firm, agrees that layering is a prominent look in jewelry. “Anything stacking — necklaces, rings, bracelets. Personalized jewelry, anything with a message, is important right now,” he reports. “Mixed metals and mixed materials — such as diamonds and oxidized silver — are also big right now, as are dainty pieces with a diamond presence.”

Luther notes that white continues as the dominant color on the runways along with black. Nude-toned pastels are also important, along with more vibrant yellow, green and blue. “Navy is the comeback color of the season,” she says. “Royal purple takes a seat on the fashion throne and many, many designers see red ahead.”
In its Spring 2016 Fashion Color Report, Pantone describes the hues of the season as a “transporting and transformative canvas.” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute, notes that “Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.”
According to the report, the season’s colors are influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, leading designers to gravitate to a more calming color palette. Also notable is the fact that the season’s palette is more unisex, transcending cultural and gender norms.
With fashion’s new anything-goes attitude, diamonds will be a go-to. Whether classic white diamonds, warm brown, edgy black, slices or opaques, these precious gems span a range of offerings that will reflect the personal style of anyone wearing the sparkle.
