 In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Gilbert Albert Jewelry, the design house is showcasing “Magical Visions: The Jewelry and Sculpture of Dashi Namdakov” at its New York City gallery. Formally trained as a sculptor, the Buryat, Russia-born multimedia artist Namdakov draws upon Buddhism and Shamanism as well as natural, spiritual and historic sources to create pieces that reflect a larger sense of life. Presented by the Russian American Foundation, the exhibit is a collection of sculptures, silver miniatures, graphic works and 40 jewelry pieces. Highlighting Namdakov’s background as a sculptor, each piece of jewelry is an intricately detailed, fanciful creature with expressive faces. Gemstones are used as glowing eyes, shining teeth or to highlight the structure of the face in such a way that it brings each piece to life. Namdakov balances line and motion in a three-dimensional form using animal bone, precious metals and gems. David Yurman opened a boutique at The Somerset Collection in Troy, Michigan. Located at 2801 West Big Beaver Road, the 1,506-square-foot store features classically modern architecture with every interior design element intended to reflect the brand’s “luxurious yet relaxed’’ aesthetic. “As an American brand, we’re proud to make a home for ourselves here in the Detroit metro area,” said Carol Pennelli, president of David Yurman. “Our partnership with Somerset Collection allows us to provide the luxury retail experience that is signature to David Yurman.” Rogers & Hollands debuted its Canadian Ice shop-in-a-shop concept at its new jewelry store in Muskegon, Michigan. It marked the first boutique shop-in-a-shop for Canadian Ice in the U.S. Canada Ice launched the branded concept in December 2012 with its debut in Goldsmiths in the Westfield mall in London. The 75-store Rogers & Hollands chain has carried Canadian Ice diamond designs at its jewelry stores since late 2012. Borsheims plans to open a second store in the Omaha, Nebraska area. Owned by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway company, the jewelry store will open a smaller boutique in the rebuilt outlet mall along Interstate 80 near Gretna. It opens later this year, according to a report by the Associated Press (AP). The new outlet mall will also have a Helzberg Diamonds store, which is also owned by Berkshire, and Kay Jewelers, which is owned by Signet Group, and a Swarovski Crystals store.—Additional reporting provided by Acquire Media. Jewelry brand Ritani expanded its partnership program into Canada with 12 new premium jewelers, joining the company’s 60 U.S. retail partners. Ritani’s Canadian jewelers will become part of its omnichannel network that enables shoppers to begin their engagement ring experience online and pick the ring up at a Ritani partner jeweler. Ritani considers the local jeweler’s connection to the process as redefining the online jewelry shopping experience by providing a trusted source who can also build the customer relationship. Partners benefit from an integrated ecommerce solution, additional revenue, increased lead generation and marketing material. Located throughout Canada, the new partners include Calgary Jewelry, Creative Goldsmiths, Damiani Jewelers, Diamond Design, GemOro Goldsmith, Heinrichs Jewelry, J.H. Young Jewelers, Knar Jewelry, La Mine d’Or Jewelers, Nash Jewelers, Rodan Jewelers and Victoria Jewelers. Ten female film directors and actors were honored on September 11, 2013 at the Maison Birks’ Bloor Street W. store in Toronto, Canada during an inaugural “Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film,’’ in partnership with Telefilm Canada. Directors Louise Archambault, Deepa Mehta, Alanis Obomsawin, Sarah Polley and Chloé Robichaud, as well as actresses Evelyne Brochu, Geneviève Bujold, Sarah Gadon, Jessica Paré and Alison Pill, were selected for the award. The event took place during the Toronto International Film Festival. Criteria selection included the impact of the women’s achievements and talent, the recognition they have received and the visibility they have brought Canada over the past year. Nominees were also required to have either directed or appeared in a production during the past year. Entrepreneur and TV personality Bill Rancic, who gained celebrity as the initial winner of NBC’s “The Apprentice,” will partner with Timex when he competes in the 2013 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3. Ranci will train using the Timex® Ironman® Run Trainer™ 2.0 GPS that provides real-time pace, distance and heart rate data. Rancic will also raise money for Fab-U-Wish, a charity that his wife, Giuliana Rancic, started that grants wishes to women fighting breast and ovarian cancer. He will be the last person to begin the race and for every runner he leaves behind en route, Timex will donate $1 to the organization. The Texas Jewelers Association (TJA) named the winners of its design contest at its 2013 convention that was held at the SMART Jewelry Show in Dallas. The judging categories were determined by Texas bench jewelers and included a special category for student entries. - Michael von Krenner received the Best in Show for his “Aqua Caliente,” an aquamarine and gold ring. He was sponsored by Benold’s Jewelers of Austin, Texas.
- Sirandyn Wayne took first place in the student category for her sterling silver and freshwater pearl bracelet.
- Ziad Noshie won for “Archipeligo,” an 18-karat yellow and white gold necklace featuring diamonds, opals and black onyx.
