As we approach fall, thoughts turn to back-to-school,
holidays and what to wear as the weather turns cooler. This fall and winter see
the continuation of some trends as well as some new looks for the season.
• Color remains important, but gone are the neon brights of
summer. Instead, look for muted color washes of yellow, green, pink and purple.
The one exception is electric blue, which stays in the forefront, taking on the
role of a neutral. Speaking of neutrals, gray in all its glory is a soft
alternative to black, which is back in a huge way, thanks in part to the
color-blocking craze. Camel and coffee-with-cream browns are also paired with
black for a classic look. Colored gemstones are the perfect way to pick up on
the rich hues of fall. Warm maroon and regal violet purples are key colors for
the season, making amethyst, garnet and pink tourmaline harmonious. For those
more adventurous, try contrasting colors such as green peridot, emerald or
orange fire opal. Of course, white diamonds will go with everything, popping
against these deeper colors.
• Lace, brocade and metallic-threaded fabrics add texture
and luxury to fashion this fall. Bold gold, silver or platinum jewelry work
well for this luxe look — especially when shining with diamond accents.
Cocktail rings are a perfect match. The look is rich and classic. But hipsters
may want to pair up lace, brocade or metallics with oversized sweaters, tights
and chunky boots. That creates an edgy grunge reboot that will work well with
vintage-inspired jewelry, stacks of bracelets or anything with charms. Opaque
diamonds or diamond slices and gray or champagne diamonds with blackened metals
also work well.
• Patterns influenced by faraway lands and a vintage vibe
that flashes back to the 1970s continue. Subdued tones rule in patterns. Animal
prints are also a must, with leopard, zebra and snakes leading the pack in
sometimes unexpected color palettes — grays and blacks mixing with yellows,
blues or purples to create a fanciful fashionista creature. Dangling earrings
and wide cuffs work particularly well for these styles, as they don’t get lost
in the patterns. Color blocking continues to look contemporary and is also
complemented by wide cuffs, long earrings or long necklaces. Blackened metals
with a contemporary flair will look just right.
The fall/winter season promises to be eclectic — colorful,
luxurious and the perfect backdrop for jewelry.
