Observations of Trends

By Amber Michelle
RAPAPORT... Winter always turns to spring and as it does, thoughts turn to fashion and accessories. The ENK International Accessories Circuit held in New York City last month showcased the most directional looks for the upcoming season in all categories, including jewelry.

Here are some of the top trends from the show:

• Back to the Pyramids. Jewelry with an ancient feeling was prevalent. Textures, matte finishes and spiritual messages that give pieces the feeling of an amulet are key for this look. The Ohm symbol is continuing to gain strength. These pieces often feature cabochon stones, rose cuts, high-karat gold and a dusting of diamonds for a sprinkle of sparkle. Pink, rose and red golds add a modern take on ancient themes.

• Geometry Class. Geometric forms are always important; open circles and discs remain popular. Elongated ovals are a fresh take on a favorite shape.

• Jingle Jangle go the stacks of bangles on the arms, as spring and summer call for lots of action on the wrist and at least one enormous ring on the finger.

• Going the Length. Earrings and chains continue to be long. Chains remain an element for layering and they take on a more prominent role with pendants as they morph into a part of the design rather than having the pendant as sole focal point.

• Extremes. Handbags continue to be the size of overnight bags or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, clutches — especially in very long shapes — are holding on. Extra-wide belts emphasizing a higher waist are gathering momentum. The palette for bags and belts is mostly neutral, with metallics still a force, but in a more muted, matte finish than in seasons past. Gold trumps silver.

• The Call of the Wild roars on as animal prints are still stampeding to popularity. Leopard and cheetah lead the pack with bold zebra also in the game.

• Softer, subtle and more neutral colors rule. Black, white and shades of brown make a statement along with sky blues and sage greens.

Other buzz at the show came from a designer who works closely with Hollywood stylists. She reported that the stylists plan to keep Tinseltown’s leading ladies dripping in diamonds to ensure that the ice doesn’t lose its cool in the aftermath of recent publicity. This was borne out at the Golden Globe Awards, where the show business elite — gathered to honor excellence in film and television — were glittering in diamonds, especially earrings, bracelets and large rings worn on the right hand.
