It’s official! The recent circuit of summer jewelry shows proves once again, jewelry is the “must-have” accessory. The JA New York Jewelry Show, followed by the Accessories Circuit a few days later, showcased two distinct looks: small and dainty pieces for layering and big, bold statement pieces. These two trends work well with clothes for the upcoming fall season, which are filled with color, texture, embellishment and brash patterns. Large statement jewelry can stand up to all the design elements in the apparel, while smaller jewelry pieces, easily layered, are discreetly understated and do not clash with the clothes. Big earrings — especially long and sleek styles — are still important, as they are the perfect complement to the dazzling sequined necklines found on many of today’s fashions. Cuff bracelets, stacked bangles and cocktail rings or a single large band with diamonds also work well as a counterpoint to highly decorated clothes. Blackened jewelry appeals for its fashion-forward style that also stands up to multicolored, bright prints and textures. Even a small diamond set in blackened silver or gold pops like fireworks. Charms, many sprinkled with diamonds to make them more special, were ubiquitous at both shows, as consumers strive for personalization in an ever-increasingly homogenous sea of sameness. The word “love,” spelled out on charms, pendants, dog tags and bracelets, is becoming an important theme — and what better way to say love than written out in diamonds? The icy gems continue to twinkle everywhere, from a single small diamond on a disc pendant to accents on charms or as a design highlight. When thinking gemstones, look to the moon goddess for inspiration — the luminous moonstone, a gem glowing in a range of hues and qualities, is capturing the imagination. Accented with diamonds, moonstone is one of the most pervasive stones in designs, appealing for its beautiful femininity and mystical radiance.
