The fall season is well underway, with its plethora of
festivities from now until the New Year. Stores are already putting out the
holiday decorations and party ware, children are starting to write up their
wish lists for Santa and the rest of us are just trying to keep up with the
barrage to the senses that is the holidays. Prognosticators are touting a
decent season this year. The U.S. market is strengthening…pent-up demand will
drive consumers to spend and the soon-to-be newly elected President will end
the game of wait-and-see over who it will be. Regardless of who wins the
election, at least it will be settled and people will know what to expect,
allowing them to move forward with their plans. Diamonds are faring well in the
U.S., fueled by engagement ring sales, which are especially strong
in the
fourth quarter because more engagements occur at holiday time than any other
time of the year. In addition, diamond fashion jewelry seems to be having more
of a moment than usual right now, as black, brown, gray, opaque, slices and
rough diamonds, often set in silver, create fabulous jewelry at affordable
prices. The trend to buy what has lasting value — whether in terms of the
materials from which it is made, or the memories made by the giving of the gift
— continues on. Early signs indicate that this will be a very merry holiday!
